what is ROGAINING?
Rogaining is a team orienteering sport in terrain, especially over long distances. A team of 2–5 participants visits checkpoints in an order of their choice within a set time. The main task is, by freely navigating the terrain with the help of a map and compass, to gain as many scoring points as possible, which are awarded for visiting checkpoints. Teams, which compete in several groups by age and gender, are ranked by the total points obtained. In the case of an equal number of points, the team that completed the course faster is ranked higher.
In Latvia, 3-, 4- and 6-hour rogaining events are most common, however 1-, 2-, 8- and 12-hour competitions also take place. The official control time of rogaining is 24 hours – in this format world, European and individual national championships are held.
